A prolific outdoors adventurer, Joel has climbed technical peaks as high as 17,057 ft (Batian, Mt Kenya), spent weeks hiking the deep Amazon forest, and thru-hiked 1700 miles of the Continental Divide Trail (600 of which he did with one of his dogs, Barley a rescue
mutt).  Although his recent focus has been extremely long distance
running races (VolState 314 miles, Infinitus 888 km), in his “off
time”, he enjoys canyoneering.  Canyoneering is exploring places where few people ever get to adventure, completely off the beaten path, and really lets him enjoy immersing himself in the wilderness. 328752_10150438698145954_1848727029_oA collegiate mountain biker in the early 1990s, Joel has been looking for an excuse to train all of his hobbies together – and having watched and read about Raid Gauloises, Primal Quest, EcoChallenge, and other true *adventure* adventure races – when he saw the revival of Primal Quest, he immediately contacted some of his adventure buddies. Within minutes of seeing the announcement, he and Team Captain Melody Hazi were certain they’d enter
