Keep Moving, Good Things Will Happen

Blog post as told to Carolyn Kresser:

Well, it’s really happening.  I started the week of RAGBRAI with a 4am dip of my shoes in the Missouri River.  I’d like to thank Nick and Kaeli for providing me with a great pre-race dinner, and Luke for running with me for most of Day 1.  It was nice and cool in the morning, and as expected, hot in the afternoon.  Toward the end of the day, it looked like it might storm, but unfortunately it didn’t.

I finished today’s 56 miles at 5pm – so in about 13 hours.  I took some good long breaks in some of the towns.  I didn’t take any hour breaks, but I did take two to three half hour breaks to eat and rest my legs.

I received incredible support along the route, so thank you for cheering me on!  About every minute or so I was shouting back to people who’d been shouting their support to me.  I was happy to hear that many people had heard about the route, so thank you to everyone for spreading the word.  And I was happy to tell the rest of the people what I was doing, and why.

As I mentioned, a college buddy of mine, Luke, ran the majority of the route with me today, and it was fantastic to have him along to keep me motivated.

Tonight will be an early night, as tomorrow is the big test.  Tomorrow I’ll be running 107 miles, and I can’t say I’m looking forward to it.  I am looking forward to the rest of the week after that, but I’ve got to run up that hill before I can coast down it.

I’ll be starting out Tuesday morning at 2am, and hope to finish before midnight, so please shoot me an encouraging word along the route when you see me.  I’ll need it!
